Parenting Groups & Boundaries with Kids

July 16, 2009 · 1 Comment

Leading a small group with parents this spring has been a new experience for me.  Sure it has been interesting trying to hold a discussion when the ten and under crowd outnumber the adults, but the biggest challenge has been the group dynamics of spiritual formation.

It’s not about each individual getting their stuff straight with God, it’s about each family.  Each parent has to buy-in with what God is saying, and then buy-in with what their spouse is thinking, and then get the kids to buy-in to those thoughts as well… that’s a lot of buy in!  This has been a fun and new environment for me to figure out how to follow God.

We’re using Boundaries with Kids by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend for our discussions.  I give high praise for this book to anyone working with a parenting group.  If you’d like more details, you can read the book review I did through the Small Group Exchange.

What a neat small group concept! As far as family books, I’m a big fan of The 5 Love Languages of Children.
