The Power of “Together”

November 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Ecclesiastes 4.9-12

9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their work:

 10 If one falls down,
his friend can help him up.
But pity the man who falls
and has no one to help him up!

11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?

12 Though one may be overpowered,
       two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

I’m sure we’d all agree that there is strength in togetherness, but I wonder how many actually get to experience this consistently.  I have all sorts of people to do life with - friends, family, co-workers, fellow sports fans and hobbyists – but being with people doesn’t mean I’m together with people.  I don’t think we’ll really hit at what this text is talking about without sharing dreams with another, having a shared goal and pooled resources, respect and loyalty so deep that you’d sacrifice anything and everything for the other; in short, to see life as intertwined with someone else.  Life is to be inseparable by personal ambition and interest; life is together.
