Wisdom Literature Survey
Wisdom Literary Genre is found outside of Biblical authors. Ancient Near East teachers/scribes were regularly supported by royalty to compile wisdom literature. Wisdom literature, strictly speaking, is all about responsible, practical, successful living; not IQ, history, theology, or theory. Proverbs in particular show us that things can be godly without being religious.
Abuses of Wisdom Literature
-
Using bits when the whole context was intended.
-
Misunderstanding wisdom terms. Example: “Fool” does not mean uneducated; it is used to mean “infidel” – a person who lives only on selfish whims with no respect for authority or counsel.
-
Misunderstanding the line of argument. Example: most of Job is the conversation of wrong ideology.
