Prophetic Books (Isaiah-Malachi)

Historical Setting of the Prophets

Prophetic writings take place between 760 and 460 B.C.  The Kingdom is divided, exile is coming, occurs, and in Judah’s case, restored.  The Prophetic Books overlap in time frame with I & II Kings, II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther.

Study Worksheet

Study by oracle, not paragraph.  Note that oracle and context distinction is difficult to identify.  Bible dictionaries and commentaries are crucial for the sake of gaining background knowledge on the historical, cultural, and political context of each oracle.  The poetic genre of most oracles also increases comprehension difficulty.
